Swish… Another two points by Kirby Porter was added to the swelling Bullis Bulldog’s score, making the game 57-18. Life-size portraits and flyers of the senior players, as well as blue and gold balloons and signs covered the gymnasium walls. The crowd consisted of proud parents, excited friends, loyal Bulldog supporters and a few cheering faculty members.
The game was fast-paced, leaving the cheering spectators on the edge of the stands. Cardboard faces and pins proudly waved in the air as the senior players made one effortless shot after the other. Kirby Porter had numerous fast breaks down the court, ending in completed lay-ups. She finished the gamed with 22 points. Lyneé Belton drove to the basket and used her height as an advantage to get to the net reaching 24 points. Ashley DeLeonibus knocked down passes left and right and executed her fluid jump shot, chipping in eight points. Freshman Hunter Rowson also played a terrific game with many steals and. Junior Lawrencia Moten stationed herself under the basket, waiting for the perfect moment to turn and shoot, making them all.
After the game, flashes filled the gym as parents and designated student photographers tried to capture the last bittersweet moments of senior night. The parents organized a buffet of food and treats in honor of the senior players and managers to end the night on a good note.
Ashley, Kirby and Lyneé have definitely been tremendous assets to the team and will be missed next year as they each pursue basketball on another level, allowing the team to showcase younger talent next year. Whatever happens, Ashley, Kirby and Lyneé will always be members of the varsity girls Bullis basketball team.
