It was a chilly Friday night on March 8 at the Bullis School and the lights illuminated the gym floor as the seniors huddled on one side and the faculty on the other. The dog pound was up and ready to cheer on the competitors. The seniors were hoping to put a stop to the faculty’s two-year winning streak and graduate with the satisfaction of being this year’s champions.
The seniors quickly won the jump ball and the game was thrown into motion. Anthony Thompson (‘13) forced the faculty into a zone defense. Moments later, Jordan Sullivan shot and scored from the three point line. The seniors were off to a good start, or so they thought. Boys varsity basketball coach Bruce Kelley and ex-NFL player Anthony Waters, varsity football coach, were forces to be reckoned with. Kelley and math teacher Matt Zimmer chipped in a combined 12 points while Waters used his strength on the boards while earning a several buckets of his own. The seniors knew they needed to step up, and they did. Brianna Davis (‘13) scored for the seniors with her speed on a breakaway. Danny Copeland (‘13) used his defensive energy to pick up the 50/50 balls. Winton Lyle (‘13) slammed one home to the delight of the dog pound.
With only a couple minutes left in the 4th quarter of a tight game, the refs made some controversial calls. They called math teacher Joe Teets for an intentional foul after locking Thompson in a bear hug. With seconds to go, they sent Waters to the line for two shots with a chance to tie the game. Waters only hit one of two, and Thompson corralled the rebound, dribbling to half court as time expired.
The seniors won, 55-54. The dog pound erupted into cheers. The seniors stormed the court and celebrated while the faculty congratulated them in good sportsmanship. It looks like the Bullis seniors of 2013 were successful in putting an end to the faculty’s two-year winning streak. Will the seniors of 2014 be able to follow in these footsteps earning a two-year winning streak of their own? Only time will tell!
