"Kirk Cousins is the man, I think its important that he’s apart of the team”, said Blake Matthews (’16).
"The Redskins shouldn’t franchise tag [Cousins]," said Ryan Hyman (’19). “It’s to expensive and they should use the transition tag instead."
When the 4pm deadline passed the Redskins decided on the franchise tag for the team’s single season record holder in passing yards and completion percentage. Yet, the Redskins still left room for opportunity as they placed the non-exclusive tag on Cousins. This tag allows Cousins to negotiate with other teams, but if Cousins signs with another team, the Redskins receive two first round picks in return.
This was the best option for the Redskins as they continue to negotiate a long term deal with Cousins. While the price is high, it was necessary for the Redskins to have a capable Quarterback under center in 2016.
