This year’s Super Bowl, scheduled for Feb. 3 between the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots, is a SEAR 1(Special Event Assessment Rating) event, the federal government’s second-highest security classification. The government shutdown will affect the Super Bowl this year held in Atlanta because of the airport security in Atlanta and the security around the stadium. Atlanta is the host city for the Super Bowl. Atlanta also has the biggest airport in the country. With 10% of TSA(transportation security administration) agents calling in sick or quitting, people trying to get into our out of Atlanta will be a nightmare. "It's all one airspace, so you can only fit so many airplanes in the airspace without affecting everybody."
Because of the Super Bowl, air traffic control will see an abundance of private jets. This means the air will be even more crowded trying to get into Atlanta. An FAA representative said. "Due to the large increase of general aviation and charter traffic associated with Super Bowls, delays are not uncommon for these events, but we have a comprehensive plan to mitigate those delays as much as practical." The TSA had to fly in other TSA agents from around the country to make up for the amount of TSA agents that left work in Atlanta. "We've got a Super Bowl coming to Atlanta, Georgia, in about three weeks -- the biggest tourism event in the world this year," he said Tuesday. "What if the largest airport in the world, that's going to bring all the people to the largest football game in the world, goes out of business because of the TSA strikes?” Then you've just cost millions of dollars to the United States of America, my home city -- the city of Atlanta -- and others." said U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia. The Super Bowl is one of the most popular events in America each Year. It’s an event that cannot be rescheduled or canceled.
Security in the stadium has been preparing and training for months. The Department of Homeland Security takes an event like the Super Bowl very serious. It is not necessarily a terrorist target, but they cannot take any chances on security. They say the government shutdown has no effect on the safety and security at the Super Bowl.
