2020 will not be the first time we will see the XFL. The league made its first and only appearance in 2001 during the NFL off season. It was a total failure. Ratings were extremely low due to poor play. This caused NBC to pull out from broadcasting the XFL; consequently, the league folded completely.
This raises the question, why try and bring it back?
Over the past couple years, fans have become more and more frustrated with the NFL. Frustrations have came from major rule changes, softer play, and political controversies. The NFL ratings are way down. Fans have stopped watching. “The NFL has become a league of soft play and flag throwing.” said by Brendan Kazanjian (18’). With the ratings of the NFL being way down. The XFL could have a shot at stealing the glory. “If the XFL has the toughness the NFL is missing right now i'm all in,” stated Jay Budin (19’). While some people are excited to see what the XFl will offer, others think it will be another failure.
The XFL rules are very different from the original style of the NFL. This has turned off many viewers “I will not waste my time watching the XFL, it is not real football,” said Bullis football coach, Pat Cilento. Another issue people had with the XFL is the overall look. People think the XFL is a bad look. People believed it was too disorganized, the rules were almost to crazy, and it is too explicit for younger kids. “I do not want to watch that dirty football,” said Bullis parent Avi Benaim.
What people do not realize is that the XFL will be very different in 2020 than in its only season in 2001. Vince McMahon has talked about how the rules will be changed from the original set of rules. He also has talked about how the fans will have a bigger say in the making of the rules. Leaving only the brand, XFL, the same from 2001 to 2020.
While people are optimistic about how the XFL will do, it has the opportunity to steal the spotlight from the NFL. The timing could not be any better to start up a new league. The NFL is down and people want a certain style of play. If the XFL rules can meet the wants of the fans. It has a major chance to be successful.
