At 8:30 pm Saturday, the twelve best horses in the United States will line up at Santa Anita racetrack in Arcadia, California for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The race, which will be broadcast live on NBC, is the biggest race in the Breeders Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. There are 15 races in total: six on Friday and nine on Saturday. The highlight on the Friday card is the $2 million Breeders Cup Ladies Classic. The Breeders’ Cup Classic is the feature on the Saturday card and is the richest race in the United States.
The biggest challenger to Game on Dude is Mucho Macho Man, who will break out of the gate from the eleven post. Mucho Macho Man prepped for the Classic when he ran second in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Racetrack in New York. Mucho Macho Man, the massive son of Macho Uno, will get plenty of respect and support from the betting public, and is definitely a contender. Mucho Macho Man placed third in the 2011 Kentucky Derby and if he improves off that effort, the horse trained by Kathy Ritvo and ridden by Ramon Dominguez will have a realistic chance to win. Other serious contenders in the race include Flat Out, Fort Larned, Richard’s Kid and Ron the Greek.
My selection for this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic is Game on Dude. I believe he is simply the best horse in the race, and will get a great trip sitting right off of the speed of Fort Larned. This is one of the most formidable Breeders Cup races this year, and while Game on Dude will be a short price on the odds board, he is the most likely winner in my mind. The Breeders’ Cup Classic is always one of the most exciting races all year and is a must-watch.
Quick Notes on other Breeders Cup races:
In the Breeders’ Cup Mile, which precedes the Classic, 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom makes his return coming off an eight and a half month layoff. A tough task for any horse, Animal Kingdom will take on the best turf milers in the world, including arguably the best horse in the United States this year in Wise Dan, and one of the best horses in England all year, Excelebration. The Mile will be one of the most exciting races of the whole sequence.
In the Ladies Classic on Friday night, undefeated fillies My Miss Aurelia and Awesome Feather clash in a field including last year’s Ladies Classic champion Royal Delta. This race is loaded with quality and should cap off a phenomenal Friday card.
