While Minimester can be perceived as an enjoyable experience, some students say that Minimester is an inconvenience due to the workload and distraction from their normal curriculum and that they would prefer to remain in their normal English class for the three week period. Some would view Minimester as unnecessary if they do not enjoy the topic they are assigned.
However, one of the highlights of being able to participate in Bullis Minimester is the ability and enjoyment of interacting with kids in grades 9-12. Although some classes at Bullis already consist of integrated grade levels, it is usually rare for a senior and freshman to be in the same class. In Minimester, the classroom is filled with students from all grade levels. With this varied community, students are able to meet new people and swap ideas with kids in other grades. “It’s a great opportunity with students from varied grade levels, and understanding different viewpoints,” said Allison Bass (‘17).
Another bonus that comes along with Minimester is the ability to engage with a teacher you have never had at Bullis before. Being able to switch teachers for this short time period allows students to understand different teaching methods and learn more about the teachers within the Bullis community. By having a different teacher than usual, you are able to learn more about them while picking up on some helpful English skills or methods they might teach you along the way.
Some students shared their thoughts about Minimester. “It's something new”, Julia Lowenthal (‘17) states, when relating to the curriculum that is taught during these short three weeks. During each Minimester, teachers present potential curriculum options that could be taught during the session. The students can then vote and rank the classes they would like to participate in. Although they may not get their first choice, students usually are intrigued with whatever topic they are introduced to. Whether or not it was learning and dissecting material from the 30s, 60s, or 90s, it’s an enjoyable and gripping experience. It gives the students a sense of relief from their usual routine in their standard english class.
Minimester is the perfect way to spend your English class time during this short three week break between the holidays. From integrating students from all grade levels, to learning an exciting and fresh curriculum, students are able to broaden their horizons in a unique way and learn new unique information that they may have never been introduced to before.
