With the government being shut down makes using credit cards a risk not worth taking for government employees. The annual percentage rate (APR) has climbed to a new record of 17.51 after jumping a full percentage since last year, which can be a task to pay back at the end of the year without receiving a salary. APR is predicted to increase at least two more times makes this more of a nationwide issue rather than an issue solely for government workers.
APR and interest rate are the price one pays to their credit card holders for borrowing money. Each person can have a different interest rate as it is based on personal factors such as their credit card company, and their credit score.
Thankfully, many restaurants across in the DMV area are offering discounts to government workers to aid to their credit card spending. Restaurants such as &Pizza, Radiator, and Capital Lounge have all discounted their food to help government workers at such a devastating time.
In entertainment, many theatres across the DMV are offering discounted, or even free tickets to musicals and other performances. For example, Nextstop Theatre in Virginia is offering 50% discounts on weekday performances, while Pointless Theatre in Washington D.C is offering free tickets for government workers to their production of Visions of Love. For those who would rather catch a game instead, several local universities such as George Mason, GW, American, and Howard are offering free tickets to all government workers to both boys’, and girls’ basketball games.
To see the amounts of discounts offered truly enlightens me to our country’s public as a whole. Despite having such a political division at this time with liberals and conservatives, we are still able to put differences aside in order to help one another. This government shutdown has revealed that the unity in this country is still alive.
