Many students choose to play a sport in high school, however rarely do you find a student whose talents take them all the way to an Ivy League college. Bullis senior, Kirby Porter (’14) recently committed to Harvard University for basketball, a sport she has been dominating since she was a kid. However, what many still strive to understand is how she has been able to achieve such greatness on the court while also maintaining incredible success in the classroom.
During her freshman year, as the intensity of her AAU team picked up so did her passion for the game; this was when she realized she wanted to pursue her basketball career past high school. While enduring hard practices and difficult schoolwork, Porter also made the decision to switch from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School to Bullis, knowing she would be pushed to her academic and athletic limits.
While many members of the Bullis community are aware of Porter’s excellence on the court, her academic achievements are just as commendable. Through time management and determination,
Porter has maintained a high grade point average and has eared herself a spot in the National Honor Society.
Porter has been able to accomplish all this, while also exploring other interests she has including playing piano and running track for the Bullis team.
“I’ve been in contact with the Harvard coaches for the longest time,” said Porter. “I just feel comfortable there and I know it will set me up great for the future.”
Not only has Porter managed to succeed in academics and athletics alike, she has also made a great and lasting impact on the Bullis community.
“Kirby is the kind of person who everyone wants to be friends with,” said Lynee Belton (’14). “Her personality and unique character brings a positive impact to school because she can brighten anyone’s day with just a smile.”
While Kirby pursues life on the court, she also has ideas to enter the sports management industry. Having accomplished so much thus far in her life through hard work and commitment, she will surely see similar success down the road if she continues to dedicate herself to whatever she is passionate about.
