Spooky Black is an 18 year-old singer from Saint Paul, Minnesota. In 2014, he released a mixtape entitled “Black Silk.” This mixtape explores the sad times and heartbreaks associated with teenagehood. While this album is slightly dark and gloomy, it is also beautiful to listen to sonically. Spooky has a an angelic and prodigious voice that entices listeners to hear the entire mixtape. “Without You” is the single that pushed this album into fame. The relaxed melody, lyrics, and tone in this song make the song (and the entire mixtape) marvelous to listen to.
D.R.A.M. is a Hampton, Virginia native who released a mixtape entitled “One Epic Summer” in the summer of 2014. You have probably heard his hit single “Cha Cha,” which was the inspiration behind Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” This album is a great summer soundtrack, consisting of songs for summertime parties and summertime loves. D.R.A.M. is not only musically talented, but he is also hilarious. His comedic talent shines through his goofy lyrics on his mixtape. Make sure to check this mixtape out for next summer!
3.. The Water[s]- Mick Jenkins
Mick Jenkins is a 24 year-old rapper from Chicago, Illinois. In late 2014, he dropped his mixtape entitled “The Water[s].” In this mixtape, Mick addresses the ignorance of youth, injustices in America, and his daily life. Mick explains water as being synonymous with truth, which is why he seems to be drowning in water on the cover. He reveals truths about many different aspects of life, causing listeners around the globe to sit up and listen to every word he says.
2.. Pink Polo- Masego
Masego is a 19 year-old singer and musician from Virginia. In early 2015, he released his EP entitled “Pink Polo.” This EP contains songs that integrate an old-school sound with new school ideas. His single “Girls That Dance” is the highlight of this EP. Not only does Masego sing beautifully, but he plays the saxophone throughout the entire song. The single is a beautiful reflection of the EP: melodious and meaningful.
1.. Surf- Donnie Trumpet and The Social Experiment
Donnie Trumpet and The Social Experiment is a group that consists of Donnie Trumpet, Chance the Rapper, Peter Cottontale, Greg Landfair Jr. and Nate Fox. The group released their highly anticipated album “Surf” late this spring. The entire album has a very free spirited vibe, which was perfect for the summer months following the release date. “Sunday Candy,” “Warm Enough,” and “Wanna Be Cool” were the songs that carried the album to its’ success. This album is beautiful because all of the group’s talents shine through: rapping, singing, instrument playing, etc. Be sure to check this album out!
