Rihanna dropped her highly anticipated 8th studio album on January 28, 2016. RiRi teamed up with Roy Nachum, a contemporary artist, to create the abstract album cover. The cover art features Rihanna as a young child with a crown covering her eyes and one of her poems written in Braille.
Rihanna teamed up with Samsung to introduce ANTi by releasing a series of artistic (and slightly scary) videos entitled “The ANTi DiaRy” two months before the release. The video series reveals the abstract and mystical aesthetic of the album. Each video is carefully crafted and is jampacked with meaningful scenes. Visually, the video series is pure art. From Rihanna’s makeup to the hidden concepts in the videos, the series captured her fans’ attention.
The sound and visual art of the project both capture how much Rihanna has matured artistically throughout her career. This maturation is shown through her emphasization of symbolism throughout the project. Before, Rihanna was a great artist. But her new evident attention to details in the project really pushes her over the fence of great artistry.
For some time before the album was announced, Rihanna seemed to be pursuing her fashion career (teaming up with Puma, Stance Socks, River Island etc. for clothing ventures). ANTi showed the world that Rihanna’s heart is still very much into music.
Work, the first single on the album, features Drake. Together, Rihanna and Drake achieve a reggae-sounding track with a modern hip hop twist. The single was dropped just a day before the album; A smart business move that enticed the public.
Higher, Desperado, and Needed Me are three tracks from the album that seem to be fan favorites also. Each song captures a distinct emotion which demands the listener’s attention. While love is the overall focus of the album, RiRi delves into different aspects of love. Heartbreak, lust, and betrayal just to name a few.
ANTi went platinum in just 24 hours, which speaks volumes to the greatness of the album. This album was certainly a win for Rihanna and her record label.
