Art and community service have gone hand in hand for generations. Art can be an aid in many different ways. Now, thanks to the addition of the National Art Honor Society into the Bullis community, art and community service are synonymous at Bullis.
NAHS is in its first year at Bullis and it has already been a success. The club already has passionate leaders in presidents Esther Kim (‘13) and Drew Micholas (‘14), as well as vice president Justin Schuble (‘13). The NAHS meets during club period, but does activities outside of structured club time. The main objective of the club is to bring community service and art together.
The club’s current task is making masks that will be featured in the winter musical.
The club does school-based community service by aiding other departments.
Schuble added that the club is painting sets for both the Upper and Middle School musicals.
Art teacher Maire O’Neal is the faculty advisor for NAHS and explained that the art department has been asked to contribute projects outside of the classroom for years, and now there is a way of accomplishing that. The club also does community service with the outside world.
“NAHS also worked with the senior citizens from Manor Care and showed them around the art show, which they thoroughly enjoyed,” said Schuble.
Members of the club enjoy themselves because they get to make art that can help organizations reach their goals and be appreciated by a wide audience. Members of NAHS get to work together to broaden their art horizons.
Kim was excited about NAHS because “I get to combine my love of art and community service into one club.”
The NAHS was created to do good work both in the Bullis community and in the surrounding areas. The impact of the NAHS will be felt as soon as the winter musical and well into the future.
Schuble’s envisions NAHS becoming a fixture in the list of Bullis clubs.
The NAHS is certainly off to fast start, and its impact will certainly grow as NAHS becomes better known throughout the community, and will be beneficial for not just students, but the entire Bullis community.
