Whether it is the breathtaking scenery of Cannes with it’s warm weather and the Mediterranean Sea or the hills of Hollywood that gaze down on the annual bustle of paparazzi and glittering dresses, film festivals are always in high demand.
Secluded from all the glitz and glamour comes an alternative type of film festival specializing on one category: Short Films.
The 10th DC Short Film Festival pays tribute to the art of short films, screening over 150 films from 23 countries. The eleven-day festival is held in various location’s around the nation’s capital including the renowned E Street Cinema, Angelika Film Center and the US Navy Memorial. Film-loving Washingtonians will have the agony of choice between the screening of thrillers, animations, documentaries and comedies ranging from one minute to half an hour long. The popularity that the festival has gained over the past decade, though, is not merely a result of local audiences:
"DC Shorts is getting to be so well known beyond the Beltway. It sort of puts D.C. on the map as a place for film and a cultural entertainment center,” said Crystal Palmer, director of Washington’s Office of Motion Picture and Television Development, in an interview with the Washington Post.
At flamboyant movie festivals, you face tight security and annoying paparazzi; the DC Shorts Film Festival is a pleasant alternative. With the scent of popcorn in the air and an atmosphere that gives off a lively yet personal buzz, you have the unique opportunity to interact with fellow short film connoisseurs as well as the projects’ directors.
Aside from the atmosphere, the screening of the movies is as unique as their content. “I feel like we take everyone on an emotional ride." Jon Gann, Festival founder and Director, notices while explaining his “tapas” movie concept.
Where else do you have the chance to watch nine unique films in ninety minutes?
The DC Shorts Film Festival is one of many great opportunities for a Bullis student to take advantage of the rich cultural options that DC has to offer. Engaging films, a pleasant atmosphere and a lovely crowd encourage you to dive into a world of cinematic short films, a decision you will not regret. Enjoy!
