It’s November 4, 1979, and the streets of the Iranian City of Tehran are crowded. Neither excitement nor happiness drives the citizens out on to the streets, but rather anger and frustration. After the country’s recent revolution, the government had been weakened and it's former leader, the Shah, was dethroned.
Argo, directed by Ben Affleck, recaps the exact events that happen leading up to storming of the Embassy and the events after… With an excellent cast consisting of Affleck himself, Alan Arkin, John Goodman and Bryan Cranston, this movie is a must-see. With only a matter of time before the angry Iranians find the six escapees, the American Government has to come up with a efficient plan to get them out of the country without being noticed.
The idea that the U.S. State Department rallied behind to rescue its hostages was to disguise agents as a film crew. They set up a phony film studio, and did everything in their power to make the world believe Argo was a real film. They then send CIA specialist Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) into Iran to help the six escapees flee the country. Mendez meets the six escapees at the Canadian Embassy and supplies them with Canadian Passports. Disguised as a Canadian film crew, Mendez and the six others travel through Tehran, pretending to film for their science fiction saga and using the Iranian scenery as an excuse. During their traveling, the crews' limits are often tested as internal as well as external struggles make their escape an arduous challenge.
Instances such as when the operation is almost cancelled or when the film crew members find themselves in a bazar full of angry locals are just some of many parts of Argo where one is sure that the crew’s cover is blown. Great actors, incredible cinematic shots, and edge-of-the-seat moments underscore the greatness of this movie. Argo is appealing to those who appreciate movies that involve secret government operations and a close-up view of other countries and their history. Whether the “Canadian Film Crew” will make it out of the country alive or if their disguises will be revealed is for you to find out.
