And Imperial lives up to his aesthetic musically. This beats on this project are abrasive and hard hitting. Ronny J handles much of the production and it suit Denzel to perfection. With the exception of The Underachievers Denzel Curry is the only rapper currently making trap bangers with such strong political conviction. If kendrick Lamar is the hip hop articulation of the philosophy of Martin Luther King Jr, Than Denzel Curry is Huey Newton's Black Panthers.
He makes songs about drugs, growing up in poverty and other traditional hip hop motifs but he lyrically takes them in a completely different than most current MCs. He makes black power palatable to a wider audience in lines like “Who said Jesus can't be a black guy? Even Luke Skywalker's father was on the dark side,” on the song “Story: No Title.” He samples Malcolm X at the end of the song Narcotics.
The first half of the album is some of the most hard hitting music released in 2016. After the excellent song “Knotty Head” featuring RIck Ross, the album takes slowed down approach but Curry takes this chance to come even harder lyrically making the album feel balanced.
This is one of the best projects of 2016 and is the perfect anthem to Black Lives Matter action. Trayvon Martin was from the same neighborhood as Denzel Curry and you can hear the anger and sadness in the project from his untimely demise. The Florida hip hop is one of the most music scenes coming up and Denzel is trailblazing the way for more artists to come up and be successful.
