You most likely have seen her work displayed throughout the hallways or shown in art exhibits. Samantha Jan (‘19), joined the Bullis community as a freshman. She is a Chinese- American who has grown up in this area. Art has always been a love for Samantha because she views it as an outlet for expressing creativity and escaping the harsh stresses of reality. Samantha finds inspiration in her art.
Since beginning her Bullis career, Samantha has taken a plethora of different art courses, including Intro to Drawing, Painting 1, Visual Arts 2, and Advanced Studio art. “ Bullis pushes me to achieve my best work in the studio” Samantha said. “Mistakes are welcomed” Samantha said. “A mistake within your paint strokes can add beauty to the piece.” More than satisfied with the courses and instructors which Bullis provides, Samantha had one suggestion: “ Maybe branching out to more digital art, integrating technology and offering classes such as animation.”
Samantha enjoys working with many different medias but has a love for painting, whether it be digitally or on canvas.
Currently, Samantha is working on a project which she has titled “ Speechless”. The piece depicts an emotionless woman, made up of thousands of words in black and white. Behind the poker-faced women hides endless hidden value. The words are all feelings and emotions which Samantha has at one time or currently does feel. Samantha shared that most of the time she keeps her feelings internalized, “this piece shows that visually” Sam said. She explains that having the words make up the woman's figure show that the thoughts remain inside though.
Outside of school, studying takes up the majority of Samantha’s hours; this does not leave time for extra-curricular, after-school art programs. Sam says that art is place to get away from the stressful life of a high school student though, “For me art is a way to escape reality, which a lot of the time is very structured. But with art there are no limits, I can let my imagination take over.” Samantha appreciates how Bullis allows time in her busy schedule to explore her artistic talents.
Samantha hopes that her art can inspire others. Whether you are an athlete, a musician, an actor it is important to have an outlet in the hectic schedules that high school students have. “it is important to have the freedom to create, we need more of that in today's society to escape the rigid and structured lives.”
